Family Fun Day on Fifth Avenue Park Slope Brooklyn | New York City
New Yorkers share their perfect day so you can find yours.
created by | Valeen
transit | walkable
distance | 1.1 mile
est. transit time | 23 minute walk end to end
This outing is a typical Saturday or Sunday for my family. We usually start and end with food, with lots of art making, comic book browsing and plenty of running around the park in between.
Valeen is the Founder of Private Picassos, a visual art company based in Brooklyn, NY. She started Private Picassos in 2006, traveling around NYC directly to clients for private lessons. 13 years later they have a staff over 20 Art Teachers who lead programs around NYC, Westchester, Long Island and at their Park Slope Art Studio. She is also a Mom to 3 year old Ravi and lives in Bed Stuy with her husband Sunny and their cat Blanche.
Konditori “confectionery” in Swedish was born in Park Slope and has since grown into several locations. Grab a cup of coffee and a bagel or one of their amazing muffins (I love blueberry/banana muffin).
Visual art studio offering classes and drop-in programs for kids and adults
237 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215
We usually stop by the Studio so I can check on things and my son can dive into the large painting area. His latest obsession is making handprints all over his paper and seeing how many colors he can mix at one time :) He also loves making sculptures with our Mixed Media Clay Sculpture project or playing with the magna tiles we always have on hand.
$ | Casual Mexican eatery plating tacos, burritos & more in an upbeat space with exposed rafters & brick walls
278 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215
I’ve been obsessed with their gringo tacos and chicken nachos for years now, as well as their brunch cocktails. The food is always on point, and the staff is always friendly to even the craziest of toddlers!
J.J. Byrne Playground
Free | Public playground
3rd St. & 5th Ave, Washington Park, Brooklyn, NY 11215
This is a great playground that was renovated a few years ago. The water features are perfect for a hot day, and they also have a ton of equipment for climbing, swings, etc. Its usually hard to pull our son away from this playground, but our next stops usually help.
Classic comic book shop
429 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215
My son is obsessed with comic book stores and this is one of his favorites. Great selection of books for kids and adults (my husband and I also pick up stuff when we’re here). They also have a lot of toys, action figures and posters for any avid comic fan.
$$ | Quaint bakery offering cookies, cupcakes & other desserts along with custom cakes & cooking classes
260 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11215
This is a family favorite - we also get all of the desserts for Birthday Parties at our Studio from this delicious bakery. I usually get a chocolate cupcake or their candy cookie. My son loves all sweets, but their chocolate chip cookies or whoopie pies are his favorites for sure.
Take the train or bus home for nap :)
We usually walk back to Fort Greene and pick up the G train at Fulton Street. Or if you’re lucky and the 63 bus actually goes by (its pretty hit or miss) you can take that all the way down 5th avenue.
